Making Your Website Work with the Writing Roads' 4 C's
Websites do not 'work' just because they are live and pretty! Follow my 4 C's -- Change, Currency, Connection & Contribution - to make your site come alive online.
Ahhhh…Change. While many people dread it, you know the cliché all to well -- Change is inevitable! And, something you may not know is that change is a goldmine for your website. When the search engines visit your site, they are looking to see if you have relevant information -- and to them that means that your information is constantly updated, new, and changing. If they come by a second, third, or fourth time and see that you still have the same 5 static pages (home, about, services, etc.) posted, they will no longer interested, and you will not be ranked well for searches and no one will ever find your site.
Currency -- nope, not the money kind. This is about being current. You can't just fill your website with useless information. It has to be useful, current, and relevant -- and it needs to pertain to the subject matter of your business. This can be incredibly fun. Find other sites, get 'Google Alerts' about your topic -- and keep your finger on your pulse. Then put your own spin on what's going on in the world.
Connection -- The original purpose of the World Wide Web was to connect people and create a huge pot of shared information. When you learn to use the internet in this way, it will really work for you. In the spirit of connection, I encourage people to create a business web -- a map of the businesses or people that are connected to your business but that don't directly compete with your business (An example if you were a wedding photographer would be a florist or an event planner). By connecting with these people, you can create 'joint venture partnerships' where you each filter business to each other. This is a great way to do permission marketing as it is never a cold call when you can say, 'Sandy the florist asked me to call because you are looking for a photographer for the big day!'
Contribution -- People want value, they want to 'get theirs' -- so give them something, and make them come back again and again. If you offer people good, entertaining and useful information, they will come to trust you for your opinion, rely on you for your service or product, and send all of their friends your way. One tactic is to offer something free at the get go -- let them get to know how amazing you are risk free.
The most powerful thing about the 4 C's is that they are chameleons. They change with the landscape. They also sprout new tails in necessary situations -- be creative and thrive!
