Ten Ways to Get More Out of Your Life

Physicians lead busy, stressful lives and put themselves at the bottom of their list of priorities. If you believe everything hinges on YOU, how can you continue to serve people if you are not in peak mental and physical condition yourself? How does running yourself into the ground help others?

Practice what you preach. Take care of yourself. One way of achieving this is by ensuring your life is balanced. Your life should not be only about serving others -- you must include yourself. If this is more easily said than done, here are 10 tips to help you get started:

1. Know What You Want. Many professionals choose their careers for all the wrong reasons, and even if you are in your chosen career, what else in life do you want to experience and discover? What else would make you happy and fulfilled? Keep "shoulds" and "oughts" out of it. This is purely about "wants".

2. Endeavor to "Live" your passion. I'm not talking about your passion to heal others. There is more to your life. We are seeking balance. What else are you passionate about and how can you incorporate that more into your life? Remember: balance!

3. Don't just dream about it! If your dream is to take every Thursday afternoon off to play golf, make the appointment now. Do it. Dreams don't become reality by just thinking about them.

4. Planning. Don't know where to start? Start with the end -- start with where you want to be and work backwards to where you are now. If you look to the future and plan, you are already taking the first step forward to incorporating your desires into your life.

5. Learn to say no. Avoid burn-out, stress, and the inability to "have a life" by setting boundaries. If nobody else around you is caring about what "you" want in life, it is time you educated them. This is not being selfish. This is called "having a life".

6. Remove any attachment to Expected Outcomes. This can be hard. We are so attached to a specific outcome and become upset if things don't turn out the way WE believe or expect they should. You can enjoy more of what you get out of life by releasing any judgment about people and events and any expectations you have. Accept that whatever happens is for the best and highest good of all concerned -- whether it makes sense or not. Sometimes, we do not have all the answers and we don't have to. Accept people and situations for what they are. Relinquish and experience the freedom of living in the flow of life, and open yourself up to wonderful "coincidences".

7. You Attract What You Think About the Most. If you are not familiar with this concept or the laws of the universe in terms of attraction, grab a book and start learning. Why struggle for something when you can attract it to you so easily? Simplify your life and start to "attract" everything you want in life by focusing your thoughts on your wants. Don't think about what you don't want, because by putting your focus on those thoughts that is what you will attract.

8. Helping others. You do this all day -- but do you do it in your personal life? Do you do it when you are not being paid to do it? Just ask yourself, in any given situation, "how can I best serve this person?" Think back to a time when somebody "served" you and remember how it made you feel. It might be something as simple as getting information for somebody to save them time. As you do this, you open the way for the laws of cause and effect (or "karma") to apply, and what you give out will come back to you in more expansive and rewarding ways.

9. If you're really "stuck", hire a Coach. If someone were sick, you'd tell them to see a Doctor. If your life is unbalanced, you send them to a Life Coach. A Life Coach helps you achieve work/life balance and achieve more in your life than just professional glory. You are worth it and you wouldn't be the first professional to hire a coach to help you achieve what you can't achieve on your own.

10. You are here to have Fun, too! You are human, like the rest of us. There is no law that says physicians must only work and never be allowed to enjoy themselves. You already do a great deal of good for mankind, so find ways to reward yourself and enjoy your life. Do something simply for the pleasure of doing it. Make time in your life for doing it. Don't wait until it is too late. Don't reach old age with any regrets. You only have "now" -- nobody can guarantee the future!
