The Real Reason You Aren't Losing Weight

Has dieting left you feeling like a failure? Do you wonder what is wrong with you; why you just can't keep the weight off? Maybe you haven't found the right diet yet. Or, maybe you need more "willpower" to avoid your favorite foods. Whatever reason you attribute to your lack of success with dieting, you are probably finding your trust and confidence dwindling with each failed diet attempt.

Despite what the "experts" will tell you, losing weight is more than simply calories in, calories out. If simply eating less calories than you expend worked, almost anyone on a diet would lose weight. Sometimes it does work and you lose weight. But if you are like 95% of all dieters,  you find the weight coming back. The truth is that failed diet attempts are not your fault. Diets don't address emotional overeating, which is a major reason why people gain weight and why they have difficulty losing it.

If you want to lose weight, you first have to explore two areas: why you have the extra weight, and how it might be benefiting you.

Asking yourself, "What is this extra weight doing for me?" may seem like a ridiculous question at first because you do want to lose weight. But think about it-- despite all your efforts to lose weight the "right way", something is keeping it from actually happening.

Finding the answer may be uncomfortable. It may be related to an issue you don't want to acknowledge. A common reason for hanging on to weight is past abuse. Extra weight can act like a shield or a fence that keeps others out so they cannot get close to you, or hurt you. After you understand this reason, you can take action to heal (therapy, for example) and work through the issues that are holding you back from having a fulfilling life.

Other reasons may not be so deep or intense as the issue of physical or sexual abuse. Keeping extra weight can serve as a distraction to avoid dealing with other areas of your life. The weight may allow you to blame your unhappiness on it instead of dealing with the real problem, which may be a bad relationship or career.

Other common reasons for not losing weight may include wanting to avoid dating, or believing that it's the only reason you're accepted by a group of friends. Some use weight as an excuse for not taking risks or accomplishing a dream, when fear is the real reason for not doing so. Finally, some people grow up hearing that it is their destiny to be overweight. This is especially true for people who come from homes with heavy parents or siblings.

By bringing the answer about what the weight is doing for you to your consciousness, you can then deal with it, or dismiss it, in order to allow the weight loss to begin. The next time you feel compelled to go on a diet, take some time to look inward instead. You may just find true success lies within.
