Speak Up!

If you were born in the South as I was, you probably heard "young ladies should be seen and not heard" more often than you could count.  Starting your own business at the age of 25 in a field of 350 similar businesses all run by men will help to break that habit, as it did for me.

If I wanted to succeed in business, I learned I had to be both seen and heard -- and often.  I learned that if I was to succeed in the very male-dominated industry of advertising at that time, I had to learn faster, work harder and be more surrendered in some cases, yet more assertive in others -- and learn how to sort all of that out.  I also was very open to learn, and attracted some very great mentors during that time.

Sometimes, in order to "stand up" for my clients, I had to speak up loudly!  Finally, I decided that I wanted to be able to speak up and be heard without having to shout.  Eventually I left the advertising business, and long to know how I could put my talent to work in a way that made my heart sing.

I began to learn and to see that I could be heard more easily if I could help a lot of other women get heard -- so that learning to listen to women and their ideas, learning to take women seriously in business, learning to treat women (and men) with respect and consideration in business and in other areas of life would become a way of life.

And while it seemed to take a very long time to "hear" what my heart had in mind for me, finally at the age of 52, I did hear and see that women were practically shut out of the broadcast media and needed a champion.   At first, it seemed to me that the task was beyond me, but I made an effort anyway.  And while it has taken a long time (over 12 years) to wade through the many learning experiences of ways to give women a real voice over a larger geographic area, I am proud to be leading a team that produces WomensRadio, WomensCalendar and an incredible tool, AudioAcrobat.

And more is coming soon -- WomensRadio Channel, RadioDeMujeres, and more.

It has not been easy, and it has also not always been financially rewarding. On the other hand, it has always filled my heart, and has managed to stay alive as a business when others have come and gone.

Now I am beginning to see some of the first fruits -- an increasing stream of new and talented women coming in as Hosts and Contributing Editors, and signs that because we were here, that we have made a difference directly in the lives of women leaders -- helping to give more support to women running for state-wide and national office -- helping to shine more light on the work of great organizations that serve women and help them raise more money as well as more awareness, and the list continues.

I'm convinced, "speaking up" pays off.  There's always a way to have a voice and get heard.  WomensRadio and WomensCalendar are two places that are making a way for women's voices, and AudioAcrobat is providing the tool.  But only listening to our hearts and acting on what we hear will really allow all of us to speak up with clear authority and power.
