Fast food is sure to slow you down!
In this busy world it is easy to come up with a list of reasons why fast food makes sense. 'I didn't have time to go to the store; my family is hungry NOW and a home cooked meal takes too long to make; I spend hours in the kitchen and my family is never satisfied'…. the list goes on.
There is no denying it, short term fast food tastes good, is relatively cheap and rarely do you hear a child complain about finishing the last bite of a happy meal. But if you spend a moment and really think about it, you will realize that investing in fast food is not only an economical myth, more importantly, it is the beginning of a very unhealthy life style; obesity, diabetes, cancer and heart disease can be the result of a poor diet. As parents it is our responsibility to instill good decision making and proper nutrition for our kids.
Cooking for your self is the first step to good nutrition. Prepared foods are full of additives and preservatives to ensure a longer shelf life. Preservatives such as MSG and artificial flavorings have serious side effects, and bring zero nutritional benefits to your daily diet. A sure way to know that you and your family are staying clear of these harmful ingredients is to shop and cook for yourself. With a little planning and quick, creative recipes, cooking for your family doesn't have to be a chore; and don't worry about your wallet….have you been to MacDonald's lately$?$
Club stores are a great way to get your pantry packed with the staples. Essential items like pasta, flour, sugar, butter, milk, eggs and cheese, are considerably less expensive when purchased in bulk and are great to have on hand when dinner needs to be ready in a jiff. Bring along the kids, if they are involved in the decision making you are one step closer to getting them involved in the preparation!
Don't burden yourself with complicated recipes that require dozens of ingredients, or worse have ingredients you are unfamiliar with. '5 ingredient' recipes have become very popular, as well as 'one skillet cooking' and 'one pot meals'. Search these catch phrases on line and you will be amazed at the inventory of recipes available at the click of a button!
