Self Esteem Checks Out at the Checkout Stand
Michael Peak
Finding women who have experienced bouts of low self-esteem doesn't take much effort. Our society is filled with them. You certainly have seen a few. Perhaps you have seen one in the mirror.
It all begins when girls reach about age twelve. They become just tall enough to be eye-level with the magazine racks at the local grocery store.
Perusing the covers of men's magazines will give you lots to look at, but no real surprises. Publications such as Maxim, Playboy, and FX show off hot babes with lots of cleavage. No real surprise. Women's magazines are much different, right? Guess again.
Check out the main staples, such as Glamour, Elle, and the all time champion, Cosmopolitan. Hot babes. Lots of cleavage. And it's not limited to just the sexy magazines. The majority of magazines geared toward women feature glitzy looking models showing an abundance of skin.
These magazines are the epitome of how women are supposed to look in order to be beautiful in our society. And every time you go to the store, you are reminded of how much you don't look like the girls on the covers. And really, how could you? The cover girls themselves don't even look like the girls on the covers.
It's important to realize that as much as $50,000 can be spent on the cover of a glamour magazine. If you consider the cost of the photographer, the hair stylist, the makeup artist, the clothing, and the retouching work done afterward, the costs can skyrocket. And all that doesn't even cover the cost of the model.
In order to look like the girls in those magazines, you pretty much have to be a genetic superstar. Unfortunately, most of us are not. Yet, there it is, every time we go through the checkout stand. The subtle reminder. The reminder of what it takes to be pretty in our modern world.
What's essential to understand is what beauty really is. While looking at those magazines, it might be tough to buy into the old adage of, “Beauty is only skin deep.” The truth is, the most beautiful women in the world are the ones who believe they are beautiful, on many different levels.
Looks are certainly important, and they are not everything. Haven't you met a gorgeous girl who thought she wasn't very attractive? And haven't you met women who appeared somewhat plain and yet were always surrounded by men?
It's all about who you are and who you choose to be. Women who step into their personal power and own it are the most attractive of all. You've met women like that. You can be one, too.
Begin by trusting yourself. Know that you are powerful and capable of doing great things. Focus on good things and specifically, what you do well. Remind yourself of how really awesome you are and find ways to prove it. If you continue to focus on your greatness, it will continue to grow within you and shine for the people around you.
You really are beautiful and magnificent. You will see it when you believe it.
