My friend Gina has been battling breast cancer for almost two years. She's a very close friend and I admire her optimistic outlook and strength as every treatment she's been through initially seems to have worked, only to find out a few weeks later that the cancer is back. She's had 5 different rounds of chemo and a double mastectomy, at age 38.

She recently found out that it has spread to her lungs. Indescribably devastating news, for her, her husband, kids, family, friends and me. It was like a punch in the stomach that knocks the wind out of you.

There is a new treatment plan; the cancerous cells in her lungs are small. The new treatment is a much stronger form of chemo than she has previously been on. She's also been pursuing alternative treatments in conjunction with the chemo she was already on.

Obviously, she was panicked. During our conversation she said something that blew me away. We were both already crying and she said that she feels so badly because SHE is causing her loved ones such sadness and grief! Of course I pointed out that she is not causing anything, the cancer is. However, the fact that she is STILL so concerned with others' feelings AND feels guilty because she has something to do with them is a testament to what a thoughtful and unselfish person she is.

She is truly an amazing woman and friend who deserves a spa weekend and a break from the "c" word.
